• Excessive oil consumption (piston rings): MAIN ISSUE: Gen1/Gen2 pistons and rings allow excessive oil consumption — 1L per 1000km is not uncommon. Revised pistons exist (TSB 2011) but many units were never updated. Check oil level on test drive.
• Timing chain tensioner failure: Chain tensioner can lose tension at engine shutdown — chain skips on restart. Revised tensioner (2-prong → updated) is the fix.
• PCV valve (diaphragm) failure: PCV diaphragm tears — causes boost leaks, rough idle, and CEL. Integrated into valve cover on some versions.
• Carbon buildup (direct injection): GDI causes carbon deposits on intake valves. Walnut blasting every 80-100k km recommended.
